Dear Parents
We have had a very busy time in Y Graig over the past few weeks. For Language and History lessons we have been learning about the Great Fire of London. The children have really enjoyed this topic and we're really pleased with their enthusiasm for learning. We have been using drama and role play, making good use of our class 'time machine', to travel back in time to London during the Great Fire. We have been collecting 'Wow' words to up level our writing. Our main writing focus for the net few weeks will be on on sentence structure - Capital letter to begin a sentence, finger spaces between each word and a full stop to end the sentence (We will move on to question marks and exclamation marks later).
During our Maths lessons we have been ordering numbers on a number line, estimating and counting to check, using cubes for towers of 10 and 'ones' to create 'teen' numbers and matching numbers to number words. The children all found it difficult to match the words to the numbers as many of the words are 'sight'  words and cannot be sounded out. We are going to be looking at numbers 'more than' and 'less than' next week and we will also focus on forming numbers correctly as children often reverse numbers or form them from the bottom up! Please will you use any spare time to help your child practise these skills in their learning logs. I will collect the homework in on Monday and give out new home work the following Monday. Thank you for reading often with your child at home it's lovely to see how enthusiastic the children are about reading. They will often choose to spend time in the book corner or in our 'Cwtch Cymreig', a Welsh book reading area.We hope to send home a list of Reception and Year 1 sight words this week. These are the high frequency words that your child will need to know by the end of each year group to help with fluency and pace when reading. We use these words in school to play games such as 'pairs' or 'snap' and often display them in classroom to help children become familiar with them.
Our PSE lessons have concentrated on being 'Kind and Caring-Good at Sharing. The children are awarded a gold name tag every time they are 'caught' being kind or sharing. This is then posted in our prize pot and the name selected on Fridays wins the prize! This seems to be working quite well at the moment and the children are keen to let us know when they are being kind!!
